Gloucester Dundonald Greening
Gloucester and Dundonald Streets are two of the most appealing, pedestrian-friendly streets in the Church Wellesley neighbourhood, recognized as such by the North Downtown Yonge Urban Design Guidelines and OPA 183. The CWNA wants to build on that strength, in accordance with the Downtown Parks and Public Realm Plan, by connecting existing public parks with an improved, greener street experience.

The Gloucester and Church intersection is approved for traffic lights, so this crossroad will be a natural spot for pedestrians to pause. The property adjacent is the Grace MacInnis Co-operative; new plantings would be cared for by the co-op’s existing gardening committee. Right now it’s in bad shape partly due to it being a dog stop. We’d really like to see a retaining wall, fence or something other barrier to keep the doggies away from a new green space. The private property directly east completely renovated their gardens last year, so this would add to the “green block" experience.

The adjoining property is a Hasty Market. If the property across the street were greened, perhaps this corner could be more of a hardscape do-over, with a bench facing the garden across the street?

Progress Place is a recovery centre for people living with mental illness. We believe that any plantings could be cared for by clients of Progress Place, through one of their many day programs. The space is now dominated by BikeShare, but hopefully some of the bikes could be moved. A raised planter and a bench would be a pleasant addition here.

Nick’s Sports Shop and Central Surplus is next door. The two existing planters are now cared for in the summer by volunteers of the Church Wellesley Neighbourhood Association and water is supplied by Nick’s. This property has a bench, bike racks and the planters on its western section, but nothing on the eastern one-third.
